I provide a child-friendly art therapy approach that encourages children to explore challenges in a comfortable and safe setting. My therapeutic model centers on teaching strategies and coping skills designed to foster self-regulation and self-awareness. Over my 25 years of practice, I have consistently observed that children who learn strong coping skills are better equipped to handle their day-to-day challenges and better able to communicate their needs. Since graduating in 2000, my focus has centered on working with children aged 4-18 who struggle with a variety of diagnoses, including anxiety, ADHD, trauma and autism.
My primary goal is to help children feel capable, particularly during moments that seem difficult or overwhelming. I aim to boost their self-esteem and empower them to navigate the small and large challenges they face, both at home and in school. I like to think that in my sessions, each child is building their own toolbox full of individualized coping skills that provide support and guidance in the real world.
I utilize a family-centered approach, inviting parents and caregivers to collaborate with me in the therapeutic process. This collaboration is intended to create a more harmonious family dynamic. I am committed to sharing skills with parents that unify and strengthen the family, build rapport and trust, and provide tools to reduce family stress while increasing family fun.
My sessions incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, targeting specific strategies and focusing on treatment goals. In addition to cognitive behavioral therapy, I fully embrace my art therapy background, encouraging children to express themselves through a variety of art materials including paints, markers, clay, paper-mache, and the ever-popular sand tray.
As an art therapist, I strive to see the world through each child’s eyes and work with them to build a new, positive self-narrative. This process is designed to instill hope and increase self-esteem, helping children develop a healthier and more optimistic outlook on life.
Outside of therapy, I enjoy working with clay and making functional pieces of pottery. My dog, Ollie, loves to join me in my studio, happily snoring while I work. When I am not in my studio, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and going on walks. And I am determined to soon start learning Italian!
