What Therapy for College Students and Young Adults Can Do for You

Portrait of an african american man using laptop at home

You don’t need your whole life figured out right now.
You just need a place to start sorting it out.

Many young adults come to therapy feeling sad, lonely, or weirdly unmotivated, like their battery won’t charge. Maybe it’s feeling anxious about what’s coming next, or stress from the piles of items to check off the list. Things that used to feel fun feel kind of flat. And sometimes, it’s just too much.

In individual therapy for students and young adults, we make it easier to understand what’s happening under the surface. Then we help you build a path forward with small, doable steps. You’ll learn how to move from adolescence to independence, handle college or work, build friendships, date, and figure out what you want your life to look like.

We’ll also find the style of therapy that fits you. Some people like verbal therapy. Others prefer art therapy or sandtray work.

Over time, things tend to feel clearer. You can enjoy: More confidence. More self-trust. More motivation. More passion for life!

Therapy for College Students & Young Adults: FAQs

Your kid has questions. You have questions.
We love questions!

We’ll figure that out together.

In your first sessions, your therapist in Haverford, Paoli, Plymouth Meeting, or Center City, Philadelphia will learn about your goals and help you decide what style of therapy fits best. Art therapy can be powerful, and it can help everyone, but it doens’t mean it’s right for everyone. You might try a material or two and see how it feels.

No art talent is needed to benefit from art therapy. This isn’t about making something look like a museum piece. Most people are surprised by how their simple visual creations help them gain understanding of themselves and their relationships. If you find yourself benefitting from the creative process, great! If not, we’ll shift to talk therapy or another approach that works better for you.

Getting started is simple. Unlike therapy for younger children, as a young adult, you don’t need parents involved unless you want them to be.

Just call or email us and tell us what you’re looking for. We’ll get back to you, discuss your needs, and connect you with an available Philadelphia therapist who best meets them.

We also protect your confidentiality. We only communicate with people you give written consent for us to contact. If a parent is paying for therapy, you’ll work out together how involved you want them to be. Your therapist won’t invite anyone into sessions without your permission, but if you’d like to bring a parent in for an important planning conversation, we’re happy to do that.

It can. And most of the time, it does.

Therapy for young adults can help with many challenges, including anxiety, depression, academic stress, work pressure, relationship difficulties, trauma, life transitions, and feeling stuck. If you’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t click, that doesn’t mean it won’t work again or that therapy isn’t right for you. Fit matters. Timing matters. Connection matters.

We offer traditional talk therapy when that’s the best fit. We also offer creative approaches like visual expression, art-making, or sandtray work when conversation alone hasn’t led to the progress and change you want.

You won’t be pushed or controlled here. We collaborate. You set the pace. Over time, you build coping tools and momentum toward the life you want.

No, you don’t need a diagnosis to begin therapy in Philadelphia, the Main Line, or in virtual telehealth sessions if you are a PA resident. We believe people are more than labels, and therapy is about understanding the whole person, not fitting you into a category. Most young adults seek support for stress, relationships, identity questions, motivation, career pressure, or just feeling stuck, even without a formal diagnosis.

Our therapists get to know you as a whole person and what matters to you. Then we tailor therapy using talk therapy, art therapy, or sandtray, based on what fits. Together, we create a simple plan with small, doable steps that build momentum, confidence, and real progress toward your goals.

A diagnosis is only required if you want out-of-network insurance reimbursement. If that applies, we’ll guide you through the process and provide the documentation you need.

Absolutely! We have therapists who specialize in therapy for college students and young adults, both virtually and in person at our four Philadelphia-area locations: Haverford, Paoli, Plymouth Meeting, and Center City.

We offer flexible weekday and weekend appointments, with morning and afternoon availability. Book a free consultation to get started.
