What Therapy Can Do For Your Teen

Teen girl using laptop in bed. Using social media or studying.

Adolescence is a season of massive growth.

Bodies change. Identity forms. Emotions intensify. Social media adds comparison. School stress piles up. Friendships shift. Life transitions feel enormous.

Sometimes that pressure shows up as anxiety, anger, withdrawal, or even substance use. Other times, it looks like parent-teen conflict or a total shutdown from friends and social activities.

Teen therapy creates a space where your adolescent can talk openly, think clearly, and build coping skills to use today. We use art therapy for teenagers, conversation, skill-building tools, sandtray therapy, and other verbal and creative interventions that feel respectful rather than forced.

Teens learn emotional regulation skills, communication tools, and decision-making strategies. Parents receive parent coaching in breakout support and training meetings to review progress and develop home strategies that strengthen connection and structure.

Over time, things often feel lighter. Your teen can start to have: More communication. More accountability. More trust. More hope.

Our Approach

How Our Therapy for Teens Works

Launch with Connection

We begin with a parent-only intake session so you can speak freely about your teen’s needs, family context, and goals. Unlike therapy for younger children, teens aren’t automatically joined by parents in sessions unless they request it.

Build Real Momentum

Session 2 is a one-on-one teen assessment. This is where comfort and trust start to grow. We explore how your teen prefers to communicate, and we collaborate on goals that actually feel meaningful to them.

Soar Toward Success

From then on, therapy moves at your teen’s pace and follows their interests. We schedule periodic parent check-ins, not to share private session details, but to help you respond effectively to emotional, behavioral, and social needs at home.

Therapy for Teens: FAQs

Your teen has questions. You have questions.
We love questions!

Strong feelings, mood swings, irritability, and wanting more independence are a normal part of adolescence. But therapy for teens may help when changes in mood or behavior are intense, ongoing, or starting to interfere with school, friendships, or home life.

You might consider teen therapy if you’re seeing persistent anxiety, panic, teen depression, anger, withdrawal, declining grades, sleep changes, impulsive behaviors, bullying stress, social media overwhelm, or parent-teen conflict that feels stuck. Some families also seek support for trauma, ADHD, autism, grief, substance use, or emotional regulation challenges.

You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis. Sometimes teen emotional support is simply about building coping skills, confidence, and steadiness during a complicated stage of life.

Yes, but there’s a balance. Parents are an important part of therapy for adolescents, and we value your involvement. At the same time, teen therapy works best when your child feels safe and respected.

For teens 14+, confidentiality means a teen therapist in Haverford, Paoli, Plymouth Meeting, or Center City, Philadelphia won’t share session details without permission, except in safety situations. This isn’t about shutting parents out, it reflects Pennsylvania’s age of consent for mental health treatment, which begins at 14. At the same time, we schedule regular parent check-ins to provide general updates, offer parent support and training, and collaborate on supporting growth at home.

Teens build trust. Parents stay informed. Progress moves forward.

Sandtray therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses a tray of sand and a wide variety of small figurines to help clients express thoughts, feelings, and experiences that may be hard to put into words. And yes, Sandtray therapy is very appropriate for teens. In therapy, adolescents create scenes in the sand that represent their inner world, relationships, stressors, or goals. These scenes then become a starting point for reflection and conversation with the teen therapist.

Many teens find sandtray less pressure-filled than talking alone. It allows visual communication while staying in control of what they share. It’s always optional and used thoughtfully.

For many adolescents, it becomes a powerful tool for insight and healing.

Art therapy for teens gives adolescents a creative way to work through anxiety, teen depression, trauma, school stress, peer pressure, and identity questions without needing perfect words.

Art-making itself supports calm and emotional regulation. As trust builds, insight and coping skills grow. Art therapy with teens is not about talent; it’s about using creativity to process, understand, and move forward.

Our therapists across four locations in Philadelphia tailor art therapy to each teen’s needs, making it an engaging and effective part of teen therapy.

That’s very common. But the important thing to remember is resistance is usually self-protection, not defiance.

Therapy here is client-centered first. Your teen sets the pace and has a real voice. We don’t force conversation. We use what works, whether that’s traditional verbal therapy, art therapy for teens, sandtray, movement, even playful approaches when appropriate.

When teens feel respected and in control, resistance often softens. Over time, many who were hesitant become active participants in their own growth.

If you can get your teen through the door, we’re confident we can engage them. If you’re interested in therapy for yourself or the rest of your family, we offer individual tehrapy for adults, kids and tweens, college students and young adults. We’re here for you, your teen, and your whole family.

Your teen has questions. You have questions.
We love questions!
